Dr. Kathryn Eagles, 4th - 8th Instrumental Music Teacher
When did you develop your love for the flute? Who inspired you? My grandpa was one of the first music teachers in the Alaskan public school system after my grandparents moved up there in 1959. He was also the first person to put a flute in my hands when I was in 4th grade. He practiced his violin for at least 3 hours every day until he was 101 years old. He is still my number one inspiration to this day!
Why do you teach? Teaching music is hands down the best job in the world! I am so lucky to be able to share my knowledge and make music with the next generation of musicians every day. What creative ways have you been spending your time during the COVID-19 isolation? I have been playing a lot of music! I have been practicing my flute, piano, recorder, guitar, and I made some garbage bag bagpipes! Click here to watch the bagpipe video. I follow a lot of music teachers on social media, and that’s where I found the instructions. I figured an instrument-building craft day was in order! I had a lot of fun making them, but my dogs sure hated it! I’ve also been doing puzzles, spending a lot of time with my dogs, and catching up on house projects.
What’s the one positive thing that has come out of COVID-19 isolation in their opinion? (less pollution in the world, closer bonds with siblings, etc…) I could name so many positives! Humanity is turning to the comfort of the arts. People are learning how to play instruments, picking up instruments after many years away, participating in every type of visual arts imaginable, games etc. My social media feed is jam packed with my musician friends collaborating in concerts from their own homes, performing in the streets near assisted living homes, and also raising money from their concerts to feed hospital employees. I could keep going with positives! Anything else you would like BCD families to know. I can’t wait to be back in my classroom!!
