BCD participates in Hour of Code

Gabrielle Hernan, Technology Director
Did you know that fewer than 10% of all schools in the US teach code? Here at BCD, code isn’t something we do only one hour per year.

Students in the elementary school explore code using programs like Tynker and Scratch both during the school day in the computer lab and through our after school programming classes. As a part of their math class, 3rd-5th graders compete each trimester in the Continental Math League’s computer science contest.

6th-8th grade students take a programming class as a part of their regular academic schedule, and we also offer additional programming electives for those students interested in learning even more! Students write code incorporating engineering principles to design, build, and print projects using our 3D printer in the Maker Lab class. In physical computing, they write programs to run Arduino microcontroller boards, essentially building their own mini computers that drive both functional and creative projects alike.

At BCD, students are learning every day how programming empowers them across disciplines to become (in the words of will.i.am I the attached video), “today’s rock stars.”
