Fine Arts Week at BCD March 7th - 11th

Fine Arts Week at BCD will features artists in residence, performances by professional musicians and theatre troupes, as well as, an evening Student Art Show to showcase BCD students’ work.

This year’s artists in residence include Brent Talbot, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at Gettysburg College, who will work with Kindergarten through 6th grade students teaching them about Balinese music and dance. A frequent presenter at regional, state, national, and international conferences, his areas of expertise include: discourse analysis; music identity; world and popular music pedagogies; teaching music through movement; and media and technology in the music classroom.

Also visiting BCD will be Colorado based sculptor, Gail Folwell, best known locally for her life size piece, ‘The Edge’, commissioned by Vail Resorts and two other more recent works commissioned for the Denver Art Museum, 'In The Peloton' (2014), a cycling piece about dueling for position, and 'Tête à Tête' (2013), two figures that change interpretation when spun. Tête à Tête quickly became popular to touch and inspired the museum to adopt a hands-on exception to their rules. Ms. Folwell will work with BCD 7th & 8th grade students teaching them large scale sculpting techniques.

Performers for the week include the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and Gamelan Tunas Mekar. The CO Shakespeare Festival will perform The Taming of the Shrew for students and Gamelan Tunas Mekar will hold an evening performance on Thursday, March 10th following our Student Art Show. Gamelan Tunas Mekar is a community orchestra under the direction of Balinese composer I. Made Lasmawan. Tunas Mekar performs the indigenous music of the island of Bali, Indonesia modeled after typical village groups found throughout Bali providing an authentic glimpse of one of the world’s most fascinating cultures. Their performance will complement the work students will be doing with Mr. Talbot earlier in the week.
